MAKER LABIn addition to providing metal, wood, textile, and plastic fabrication services, our workshop is geared for assembly and maintenance of mechanical equipment like outboard motors, pumps, mills, presses, and tractors. We also have facilities for testing pumps as well as cultivation, irrigation, and agri-processing devices and techniques. Our group of 10 craftspeople works closely with clients on product design, prototyping, field testing, and market research projects.

BASE CAMPOver the years, Aywa has coordinated dozens of trips for visitors to Senegal. Our Malika compound can comfortably accommodate 20 guests, and--with our network of local partners--we are able to craft and manage logistics for tourism, research, language, and cultural immersions for individuals and organizations who want to work in, or just experience, the culture of Senegal.

RESEARCH FACILITATIONThrough our facilities and partner network, we are able to foster research around socio-economic and environmental development in the sectors of agriculture, water, energy, housing, transportation, waste management, hospitality, and tourism. We have facilitated Fulbright research, senior design and thesis projects, spring-break immersions, and voluntourism activities.

MARKET ENTRYWhen a product or service has demonstrated market demand, Aywa brings together relevant stakeholders to implement a commercialization strategy. We are currently working through this process with pumping, aquatic transport, cultivation, and agricultural processing technologies. When our new facility is complete, Aywa will also have shops along Malika’s main road, providing an ideal environment for launching commercialization and technology transfer efforts.

Our ProjectsConnecting communities through sport
Basketball has a long history and lasting appeal for indigenous communities across the US, where it is commonly referred to as "hoops". The sport has been a rallying focal point in the northwest, in particular, where it is seen as a way to come together and have fun. It has also been used to combat a sense of hopelessness among vulnerable youth. |
MALIKA, SENEGALAywa is located in Malika, which is part of the Niayes, a fertile corridor north of Dakar that provides a significant proportion of the capital's produce and poultry. Since Malika is also home to Dakar's largest landfill, Mbeubeus, Aywa is uniquely positioned to advance waste management and upcycling activities. Our proximity to commercial centers, international airport, and seaport gives us easy access to bureaucratic, import/export, and value-added distribution facilities. Over the decades we’ve worked in Malika, we have built strong relationships with local educators, farmers, manufacturers, processors, traders, banks, community leaders, and community-based organizations. Malika is also home to great natural beauty with a beach and coastal lagoons that draw a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. We are also a great pied-a-terre for forays to nearby attractions like Lac Retba, Bandia’s game park, and Goree Island.
